A Message from the President and Chief Executive Officer: Journeying Together to Advance Our World

by David A. Klassen, CFA
President and Chief Executive Officer, Pension Boards-United Church of Christ.
The heart of the Pension Boards work has always been about people—those we serve today, and those who will come after us. As stewards of your retirement assets, we carry a responsibility that extends far beyond financial performance alone. We are entrusted with safeguarding futures, honoring values, and helping to shape a world in which those futures can truly flourish
Because of Ministry…Stewarding Your Assets for a More Just World captures both the humility and the ambition of our mission. None of us advance this work alone. It requires partnership across faith, finance, governance, and global communities. It requires listening as much as leading, and conviction balanced with accountability. We are journeying together to advance our world.
Throughout these pages, you see how our approach to sustainable investing is grounded in purpose, informed by our shared United Church of Christ values, and by the expertise of our strategic partners—which we rely upon to care for your overall financial wellbeing, while caring for the growing needs of our society and planet. From the theological and ethical foundations that guide our decision-making, to the rigorous investment strategies that protect and grow retirement assets, our journey is one of integration—aligning values with long-term value creation.
Sustainability is an ongoing commitment. Whether addressing climate transition, human capital development in an AI-driven economy, water and marine protection, or corporate accountability, our focus remains clear: to invest in ways that strengthen resilience, promote justice, and deliver durable, positive outcomes for our world.
Equally important is how we engage. Through stewardship, bondholder engagement, and partnership with asset managers and global networks, we use our voice and influence thoughtfully. Engagement is most powerful when it is collaborative and rooted in a shared sense of responsibility for the common good.
In addition, all our work in the area of sustainable investing and engagement can be seen through our strong United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) results. The PRI has over 5,000 institutional investors, both asset managers and asset owners as signatories representing over $120 trillion in assets under management. As fiduciaries, signatories believe ESG issues can impact portfolio performance and align with broader interests of society.
It’s important to note that the Pension Boards scored above the median score in all categories of the 2025 PRI report. (See the chart below.)

By investing in companies that consider ESG criteria, we aim to support broader societal goals such as reducing carbon emissions, advancing human rights, and encouraging corporate responsibility.
My hope is that you see the work in this report as not only what we do, but why we do it. Our sustainable investment journey is shaped by faith, guided by fiduciary duty, and energized by the belief that capital, when deployed wisely, can be a force for good.
Together, we are advancing a future that is more just, more sustainable, and more hopeful for generations to come.
