Women’s Health: The Power of Preventive Care

Women's Health Month is a meaningful reminder and opportunity to emphasize the importance of preventive care. Women should feel empowered to take charge of their health, detect potential issues early, and build a foundation for long-term wellbeing. Preventive care is not just about avoiding illness; it is about proactively nurturing our health through screenings, lifestyle choices, and informed medical decisions. As ministers, making proactive and preventive choices can significantly improve your long-term health so you can serve others from a place of wellness.
Why does preventive care matter?
Preventive care is the foundation of a healthy life. It allows women to detect and address health concerns before they become severe or life-threatening. Many conditions – such as heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes – often develop silently, showing little to no symptoms at first. Regular checkups and screenings significantly improve the chances of identifying these conditions early, leading to more effective treatments and better health outcomes.
Women are at higher risk for medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, and breast and cervical cancer. Heart disease is also the leading cause of death for women. Preventive care helps manage these risks through timely screenings, immunizations, and lifestyle choices. Prioritizing regular doctor visits and understanding individual health risks can make a tremendous difference in both longevity and quality of life.
Preventive Screenings for Women
Preventive screenings are paramount to monitoring health and preventing diseases. Since the Pension Boards understands preventive health is not a luxury, but a necessity, both the Pension Boards Highmark Non-Medicare and Humana Medicare plans offer extensive preventive care benefits at little to no cost. For additional information on current and newly suggested preventive services guidelines for women, the Women’s Preventive Services Guidelines is an in depth and up-to-date resource. Some of the most important exams and tests for women include:
- Heart Health Checks: Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart function can prevent heart disease.
- Breast Cancer Screenings: Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer early, improving survival outcomes.
- Cervical Cancer Screenings: Pap smears and HPV tests help identify abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancerous.
- Bone Density Tests: These are crucial for detecting osteoporosis, a condition that disproportionately affects women.
- Diabetes Screenings: Early detection of high blood sugar levels can prevent complications like heart disease and nerve damage.
- Preventive Care for Maternity Health: Prenatal care involves regular check-ins with healthcare providers to monitor the health of the mother and the baby. These visits include physical exams, important tests and screenings, and planning for childbirth. The Pension Boards designed our Non-Medicare Plan maternity benefits to allow your journey to motherhood to be safe for you and your child.
Early and consistent prenatal care can help prevent complications and reduce risks to ensure a healthier pregnancy. Here are some key preventive care measures for maternal health:
- Regular Prenatal Visits: Consistent check-ups with a healthcare provider help monitor the health of the mother and the developing fetus. These visits can detect and manage potential complications early.
- Tests and Screenings: These can identify any potential health problems for the mom or baby. Early detection allows for timely medical interventions and better management of the pregnancy.
- Counseling: Seeking smoking/alcohol cessation counseling or even checking in if you might be feeling depressed or anxious are positive choices that can lead to healthier outcomes for the mother and baby.
In addition to the extensive maternal health benefits offered generally, the Pension Boards Highmark BCBS Non-Medicare Plan offers an additional program just for expectant mothers. The program offers a welcome package containing a comprehensive maternity guide, discounts on important classes and services, and even support/assistance from a health coach. If you are a Non-Medicare member, please call 1.866.918.5267 to join.
Lifestyle Choices for Long-Term Health
While medical screenings play a vital role, preventive care also extends to everyday lifestyle choices. Simple yet powerful habits can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall health. Consider incorporating the following into your routine:
- Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains strengthens the body against disease.
- Regular Exercise: Physical activity improves cardiovascular health, strengthens bones, and boosts mental well-being.
- Mental Health Care: Managing stress, seeking therapy when needed, and practicing self-care contribute to emotional resilience.
- Routine Doctor Visits: Building a strong relationship with a healthcare provider helps ensure personalized medical guidance.
Preventive care is a critical step in maintaining overall health and wellbeing. Armed with education and the excellent benefits provided in the Non-Medicare and Medicare plans through the Pension Boards, women can take the steps toward an active, engaged, fulfilling life.
Let's celebrate Women’s Health Month every month with the commitment to proactive wellbeing, because prevention is the key to living a healthier, longer, and more empowered life!
